mind tech: f a q - Here, Now, Everything & Nothing What Is Present Awareness? by Anreal

It is easy to remain undisturbed in your morning meditation or in yoga class but can you retain that level of undisturbedness when you are confronted by a sexy member of the opposite sex? It’s not that one does not engage it au contraire, one engages it completely and has a great time. If one hankers after it when it’s over or dwells on it however, one has been bound by it.

Q: What is Rigpa?

A: Rigpa is the continuous state of ‘present awareness’ which is devoid of ignorance about the Nature of the Mind and thus dualistic fixation.  It is the primary practice of Dzogchen and consists of constantly remaining in this state during all waking and sleeping hours of ones life as well as during and after death.

It is said that when one can maintain this state throughout, enlightenment can happen “even in the space between two breaths”.

Pure and Total Consciousness

“This ‘maintaining in the state of contemplation’ is the Dzogchen ideal, since one maintains the meditative absorption of things at all times.  This ensures that one does not get drawn into the drama surrounding one.  One moment concludes and gives way to the next, which does the same thing and any sense of continuity is merely illusion.

A duality which implies a ‘this’ and a ‘that’, a ‘past’ and a ‘future’, is from the non-dual perspective simply rubbish.  The only thing one truly ever knows is the Now, the one and only moment you will ever know.  The past is just a memory which is subject to colouring in retrospect.  The future is even worse, it is a theoretical construct that we make about something which has not even occurred, and when we get there it is always different anyway because our mind space has changed in the meantime.

Continuing in the ‘state of contemplation’ one eventually becomes so familiar with it that one enters the State of Presence, or Rigpa in Tibetan, without having to watch the mind too much.  The mind knows its own natural condition and it engages all things as they appear and disappear equally, simply enjoying the dance of the Five Lights.  Once one is in this State of Presence, one can effortlessly cut through any remaining dualities that bind one into form.

There is a story of a Buddhist monk meeting a Dzogchen practitioner on a road and saying to him:
“So I hear you Dzogchen practitioners meditate a lot”
To which the Dzogchen practitioner replies,
“What is there to meditate on?”
The Buddhist practitioner then responds in triumph,
    “So then you don’t meditate?”
To which the Dzogchen practitioner coolly responds
“But when am I ever out of the state of contemplation?”

Present and Aware

“To maintain this Present Aware State in the midst of exciting emotions is the path, and if you can remain Present even in the middle of the most graphic or erotic events, then you have truly arrived.

I am not talking about detachment here, you are still totally there, it is just that you do not get so swept up by events that you drop your Clarity.  This is the art and the skill.
