mind tech: f a q - Sadhana 'Means To Enlightenment' - What Is It And What Does It Entail? by Anreal

Whatever you are drawn to and suits your nature can and should be used as Means for Liberation, and what this is for you is completely personal. It is even conceivably possible to reach enlightenment by watching TV if you can see everything as just ‘the play of your mind’ and hence realise it all to be self-generated illusion.

Q: What is Sadhana?

A: Sadhana translates as “Means to Enlightenment”’.  Traditionally it refers to specific practices used to further ones awareness on the path to enlightenment.

According to the Buddha Brat view, absolutely anything and everything can and should be used to remain in, or return to the state of Rigpa.  It is especially important to adapt and modernise it in this day and age to keep the Teachings relevant and personal.

Bite the Bullet

“Since the forces arrayed against us breaking out of the cage of our own minds are so epic to begin with, we need to use anything and everything on this path.   The Buddhist word Sadhana describes the range of strategic tools with which one removes binding obscurations.  One uses ones personal toolkit of techniques to shift the mind from its bewildered state back to its natural state, where it actually wants to be anyway.

Dzogchen says that you can use anything and everything to propel you forward and if you are truly committed you can use the increased energy of the world gone mad to fuel your process.  Better hold on tight though because it’s going to be a bumpy ride.  The challenge should spur us on even further, because if we succumb to doubt or despair we end up as a chip fryer or with a bullet in the brain and if I had to choose, I would probably go for the bullet.

I would argue that our sadhana is surely up to our own likes and tendencies and varies from person to person, from yoga, to sitting meditation and visionary work, exercise or listening to music.  Using whatever we can get our hands on, but to make them truly our own by using them in the service of our own Enlightenment.”
- Adamas, Buddha Brats – A Modern Tale of Enlightenment (Chapter 02, The Path & The Goal)

Everything and Anything

“Hence the Buddha Brat ethos of using “everything and anything” to bring you back to the present.  Scary, frightening, horrifying and exciting situations all keep you very present and upon reflection everything I have done has been Crazy Wisdom Means to ensure that I do not get drawn out of the moment by some attractive fantasy, losing sight of the real goal.”
- Adamas, Buddha Brats – A Modern Tale of Enlightenment (Chapter 03, Keeping it Fluid)

The Non-Dual Mind Renounces Nothing

“Whatever you are drawn to and suits your nature can and should be used as Means for Liberation, and what this is for you is completely personal.   It is even conceivably possible to reach enlightenment by watching TV if you can see everything as just ‘the play of your mind’ and hence realise it all to be self-generated illusion.”
- Adamas, Buddha Brats – A Modern Tale of Enlightenment (Chapter 05, Method in the Madness)

Army of Mara

“As I have said many times before, it is not the getting there but the staying there, that is important.  To stay there you have to want it with every ounce of your being as you watch the Six Realms begin their assault on your psyche.  The Illusion doesn’t like it when you escape and it has many tantalizing and horrifying tentacles to draw you back with.

It is imperative that you draw on all your residual practises and skills to defend yourself at this time.  You might even survive a few small skirmishes at first without many solid practices but sooner or later the big guns will come out and everything you cherish will be used against you.  It is one thing to learn to eat a meal you don’t like with equanimity, but it is quite another having someone you love torn from you.

You use whatever you have to build up your own sense of self worth and strength. Whether your practices are sitting meditation, yoga, chopping wood, swimming, singing or listening to your favourite music doesn’t matter - as long as you can use these techniques to drag yourself out of the pit before it devours you.  When the bombs are falling it is only important that you survive, worry about the reconstruction on the other side when you get there.”
- Adamas, Buddha Brats – A Modern Tale of Enlightenment (Chapter 09, Baby Buddha Syndrome)
