mind tech: f a q - Running Through Unknown Doors What is Crazy Wisdom? by Anreal

Crazy Wisdom practitioners have always inhabited the fringes of society, outside the normal framework of what is perceived to be ‘normal’ or ‘acceptable’. Despite the disapproval of the Monastic Institution, they were especially loved and revered by ordinary Tibetans for their wild and unpredictable ways.

Q: What is Crazy Wisdom?

A: Crazy Wisdom is a legitimate Buddhist path and form of conduct which may include actions that can be perceived by ordinary people to be irrational or ‘crazy’ but are in fact part of the practitioner’s methodology toward his/her own Liberation.

Freedom on the Fringe

“Crazy Wisdom is one of the exotic Tibetan methodologies I have in my arsenal of saddhanas.  Put simply, it is the practice where you have no idea about what is going to come next but you run through unknown doors with total abandon - completely trusting that even if your next step is onto thin air it will change into a solid substance as your foot lands.  This rather gung-ho philosophy is a rapid and bona fide Tibetan methodology of proceeding along the Path to Enlightenment.  It is fraught with peril and definitely not for everyone but if one engages it one can move through mountains of karma remarkably quickly.

To engage reality with Crazy Wisdom however, does not mean one does whatever one wants at the cost of others.  It simply means that on the road to Liberation, one might do things that those who do not understand the Path, will find confusing, questionable even and at worst, unacceptable or offensive.  To abide completely in ones nature, once one has accepted it, is the path.  Few seem willing to engage it fully since there is after all always the glare of public scrutiny frowning down upon one, quietly requesting that you behave normally by denying your very nature.  Their way leads to a slow death in the suburbs after an unhappy life frustrated by the thoughts of everything you should have, would have or could have done differently.

Had I not done the things I have done, from smuggling drugs, raising my Kundalini on LSD, experimenting in séances, drinking snake venom, staring at the sun for hours at midday or any of my other seemingly crazy activities, I would not have Liberated myself.

It doesn’t matter how you get there as long as you get there and stay there.”

Stepping into Air

“Of course one can never completely know the outcome of ones actions but then this is the essence of Crazy Wisdom - doing it anyway and trusting that it will all be fine.  If you take the wrong turn or when it feels wrong you often just have to retrace your steps a bit.  There is never really any permanent harm done and you just learn where not to go.  The closest word the Tibetans have for guilt is ‘something that could have been done better’.”
- Adamas, Buddha Brats – A Modern Tale of Enlightenment (Chapter 10, The Warrior Born)

Hide Nothing in your House

“One of the central Crazy Wisdom sound bites is “hide nothing in your house”, which I force myself to adhere to.  There is nothing to fear or be ashamed off as everything comes out in the wash sooner or later, and the more upfront you play it the less you have to concern yourself with the vagaries of self-examination, doubt and lies.  Hide nothing in your house and play it wide open, then you don’t have to watch your back or conceal little secrets that might get you into trouble later.”

- Adamas, Buddha Brats – A Modern Tale of Enlightenment (Chapter 05, Method in the Madness)
